Questions on who is Jesus
By Mark Greenwood
1/ Is Jesus the Son of God?
Answer. Yes
2/ Is Jesus God the Son?
Answer. Yes (see Matthew 1:23, 1 Timothy 3:16). In Christ dwells all the fullness of the Godhead bodily (Colossians 2:9). All the Divine essence of the Godhead and personality of God are found in Christ. All the fullness of God is revealed in Christ (see also John1:1).
3/ Are the Father, the Son of God and the Holy Spirit co-equal in the Godhead, if not why not?
Answer. Yes, but it is not a matter of being equal but rather sharing the same nature, attributes, essence, power and glory. The Son of God is also called the Word of God; the Word expresses the mind of God (see John 1:1-3, 14. Genesis 1:3, 6, 9, 11, 14, 20, 24, 26, 28, 29). As the Son of God, He is submissive and obedient to the Father in everything, but also He is in absolute agreement with the Father in all the Father desires of Him. As the Son of Man He has chosen to be absolutely dependent on the Father in everything He says and does. The Father has given Him all power and authority in heaven and earth and at the name of Jesus every knee shall bow and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father. The names of God are both plural and singular. “God [Elohim= plural) created the heavens and the earth” [Genesis 1:1]. “And God [Elohim = plural] said, Let us make man in our image [image is singular] after our likeness [likeness is singular]” [Genesis 1:26]. “These are the generations of the heavens and of the earth when they were created, in the day that the Lord (Jehovah) God (Elohim [plural]) made the earth and the heavens —” [Genesis 2:4]. Jehovah is the name of God (Elohim which is plural) so includes both the Father and the Son.
When the Bible talks about the attributes of God it uses the name ‘El’ which is singular, showing that the attributes belong to the one Godhead, i.e., El Shaddai meaning God [singular] Almighty [plural]. Also Genesis 35:9,11, says, “God (plural) appeared unto Jacob when he came out of Padam-aram and blessed him, —- And God (plural) said unto him, I am El-Shaddai [God Almighty] —.”
4/ How do you explain Phil. 2 v 6, “Thought it not robbery to be equal with God”?
Answer. The Son of God has always been and still is, in His essential nature, Deity, and His outward expression showed this in all His glory and majesty. However He did not consider this outward expression of Deity something to be clutched at and held on to, but humbled Himself and gave it up temporally, for our benefit.
5/ Did the Son of God pre-exist with the Father before His incarnation?
Answer. Yes.
6/ If no one has seen God the Father at any time (1 Timothy 6 v 16, John 1 v 18, John 6 v 46), then who did Abraham see? Who met Abraham in Gen. 17 v 1, 18 v 1, 19 v 27? Also who did Isaiah see in Isaiah 6 v 1-5?
Answer. Yahweh. (Jehovah)
7/ Who is the Redeemer of God’s elect ?
Answer. There is only one Redeemer and Saviour and that is Jehovah (Yahweh) (Isaiah 43 v 11, Isaiah 49 v 26). How is it that Jesus is our Saviour and Redeemer (Titus 1 v 4, Phil. 3 v 20, Galatians 3 v 13, Eph. 1 v 7, Colossians 1 v 14, Heb. 9 v 12, Romans 3 v 24, 1 Cor. 1 v 30)? Because He is Yahweh.
